ENTANGLED is a multisensory, multi-organismic performance and installation with and about fungi. BEYOND DARKNESS explores the unknown world of the underground in it’s entanglement to all lives.
ENTANGLED is a cross-aesthetic and cross-disciplinary performance and installation conceptualised by the artist duo BEYOND DARKNESS. It is a multisensory and multi-organismic experience inspired by the hidden world of fungi, their distinct communication system and their inherent connectedness to our lives. The piece interweaves organic textures, life cycles, and interactions between scent, movement, and memories.
With ENTANGLED you are taken on a journey of curiosity and invited to take notice of the unseen and unfamiliar. Inspired by the lives of fungi, we want to relearn how to interact more attentively and caringly with nature through a recognition of our inherent interconnectedness.
Beyond Darkness was created by Nadja Mattioli and Nanna Hanfgarn Jensen in 2020. Rooted in movement, performance, and ecocentric installation, our work invites audiences into immersive, sensorial landscapes where human and beyond-human perspectives intertwine.
Darkness is a central force in our practice, not as absence, but as a space of heightened perception. When sight is reduced, the body begins to listen, to feel, to sense differently. In the unseen, boundaries dissolve, and imagination expands. We investigate how moving through obscurity can encourage and foster new connections between bodies, species, and the worlds we inhabit.
Our performances unfold like living ecosystems — guided by darkness, transformation, and the unseen forces shaping our shared world. Inspired by fungi, flora, landscapes and microbial life, we explore the intricate entanglements between organisms, crafting experiences that reframe perspectives and challenge human-centered narratives.
