Sara Malie – Charter Rite

17-20 July, 2025

Charter Rite is a site-specific installation inspired by the discipline of charter travel, exploring the parallels between world-building and holidaying, and questioning what we seek when we seek to escape.
Can a change of scenery change our mental state, or does travelling merely reinforce other, deeper power structures? Looking at tourism as a ritualized performance, the project examines the transformative and emotional abilities we expect from our holidays. By stretching the concept of charter travel to a dystopian extreme, the work aims to explore its neo imperialist undertones and challenge our desire for new landscapes.

Sara Malie’s sculptural practice spans from large-scale metal constructions to ready-mades, forming a visual fusion best described as pop arte povera. She has a strong belief in the political potential of world-building—creating fictional realities while critically engaging with the systems we navigate, viewing them as games that can be played but also hacked using one’s privilege and other cheat codes. She recently graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg and now lives and works in Copenhagen and Carrara (IT).
The piece is developed with the help of composer and sound artist Carl Ludvig Bjørklund Moulvad, who studied at RMC in Copenhagen and now splits his time between Copenhagen and Glasgow.
